Sunglasses for Children

UV protection for children's eyes

Children, like adults, can have light sensitivity. Sunglasses for children are the optimal solution to protect eyes from UV rays, as it is known that prolonged exposure can lead to eye complications (photokeratitis, cataracts, pterygium, macular degeneration and skin cancer).

Both adults and children should wear sunglasses between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV radiation is at its maximum.

Why Do Children Need Sunglasses?

Studies show that, because a child spends much more time outdoors than an adult, the amount of ultraviolet rays a child is exposed to is 3 times higher than an adult's, and by the age of 18, half of the body's lifetime exposure to ultraviolet radiation has occurred.

Criteria for Choosing Sunglasses for Children

  • Make sure the label specifies that they offer 99% protection for UVA and UVB rays;
  • They should be entirely made of plastic to avoid injury in case of any 'accidents' with more mischievous children;
  • The lens color should be uniform across its entire surface for maximum protection;
  • Gray colored lenses are preferable for children's sunglasses, as it has been observed that they don't distort colors as much as other shades;
  • Glasses with polarized lenses are most beneficial for clear vision; polycarbonate lenses are also recommended, having the best properties against scratching and breaking;
  • The frame should be large enough to cover the eyes and surrounding area well, for the most effective protection.

For babies and children under 6 months, who most often go out in strollers, ideally they should have a sun umbrella with UV protection attached to the stroller, and travel should be possible in the opposite direction of direct sun rays, so that light and UV radiation are not projected directly into the baby's eyes.

How to Convince Children to Wear Sunglasses?

  • By being a good example as a parent (it is known that little ones tend to copy their parents' behavior, so by wearing sunglasses yourself as a parent, you will notice the little one is more open to wearing glasses on their own initiative);
  • By involving the child in choosing the right glasses, letting them try different options;
  • Various protections can be attached to the temples so the little one doesn't lose them, so by buying this accessory we additionally motivate the child to wear them with confidence.

Glasses can be worn both in summer and in winter on the mountain, because rays reflected off the white snow can cause serious eye burns, both corneal and retinal, as well as to the skin around the eyes. Also, sunglasses can be worn not only on days with strong sun, because it is proven that UV radiation exists even in the shade, penetrating clouds.

At Clario you can find various models of sunglasses for children. We look forward to seeing you!
