Laser Eye Surgery

Laser
diopter reduction.

Glasses cannot replace the best visual instrument in the world: your eyes.

40+ years of experience

Millions of surgeries worldwide.

Laser diopter reduction surgeries have a history of over 40 years and currently millions of such procedures are performed annually around the world.

Technology

Maximum safety.

Technology has advanced tremendously in recent years, laser surgeries being among the safest surgical procedures due to their speed and strict action on the ocular surface.

Speed

Seconds, minutes.

All procedures are very fast, with the laser acting in just a few seconds. Anesthesia is local with drops, without discomfort.

How does the laser work?

The laser precisely reshapes the cornea – the eye's first natural lens – to reduce the diopters that were previously corrected by glasses, thus achieving correct focusing of light on the retina.

What can be corrected with laser?

You may be eligible for one or more procedures. Only the doctor can tell you what suits you best after investigations.

18-40 years

Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism.

Can be corrected with laser starting from 18-20 years, provided diopters have been stable for at least one year. The laser corrects all three refractive errors.

After 40 years

Presbyopia.

Decreased near vision occurs naturally after 40. With the innovative Presbyond technique you can get rid of reading glasses or progressive lenses.

Laser procedures, in brief.

Laser surgery - Clario Team

Presbyond provides clear vision at all distances by creating a transition zone between the two eyes, maintaining natural binocular vision. Recommended for people over 40-45 who want independence from glasses for near, intermediate and distance activities.

Presbyond details

SmilePRO corrects vision through a very small incision, without creating a flap, which preserves corneal stability and reduces dry eye risk. Ideal for thin corneas, contact sports athletes or people exposed to trauma. The procedure is very fast with comfortable, stable recovery.

SmilePRO details

Femto LASIK uses femtosecond laser for precise flap creation and excimer laser for diopter correction. The procedure is fast, painless and allows return to clear vision in about one day. Effectively corrects myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Femto LASIK details

PRK reshapes the corneal surface without a flap, being a safe option for thin corneas, asymmetries or contact sports. Visual recovery is gradual, but final results are stable and high quality. Suitable for those with increased risk of eye trauma.

Diopter reduction stages.

Evaluation consultation and preoperative investigations.

Complete evaluation for diopter reduction is performed by doctors from the refractive surgery team and will be analyzed by the surgeon you choose for the procedure.

Recommendation: for a fast journey, choose an evaluation appointment as soon as possible. See availability

Laser diopter reduction surgery.

The surgery is performed using state-of-the-art ZEISS technology. If the evaluation was performed by a different doctor than the one you choose to operate, you will come for a pre-operative check with the surgeon.

Frequently asked questions about laser diopter reduction.

Young patients should wait until their diopters stop changing. Diopters need to be stable for at least 1 year before surgery, especially for myopia, where diopters generally increase gradually until 18-20 years. Otherwise, the procedure result will be affected by subsequent diopter evolution.

For those over 40, in the case of presbyopia / Presbyond surgery, it is not necessary for diopters to be stable before surgery. Presbyopia itself involves a continuous and slow increase of near vision diopters as the crystalline lens ages.

The absence of any progressive eye disease is an essential condition for eye surgery eligibility. But it's not always sufficient. There are other criteria to consider.

Corneal thickness (the lens at the front of the eye) is very important, as vision correction is done by reshaping this lens tissue. It follows that a minimum corneal thickness is required, beyond which the surgery may become risky for the eye.

Pupil diameter should not be too large. If pupils are naturally large, there is a risk of unpleasant visual effects after surgery: halos, glare at night, especially when driving.

Progressive eye diseases such as: keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, severe dry eye, cataracts, eye inflammation prevent you from having laser diopter reduction surgeries. There are other interventions for such situations.

Degenerative or autoimmune conditions such as: diabetes, connective tissue diseases, Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV infection affect post-operative healing and are contraindications for laser surgeries.

Post-operative results are excellent and patients enjoy good vision without glasses. Recovery is usually very fast and the patient resumes activities the next day.

Your expectations should be realistic. Visual acuity depends on the eye's optical system which is corrected by these procedures, but also on the quality of the retina, optic nerve and other eye structures. The goal of surgery is for the patient to see without glasses after surgery, as well as they saw with glasses (properly prescribed) before surgery.

Laser diopter reduction procedures are considered among the safest in surgery overall. Millions of such procedures are performed annually worldwide and their history spans over 40 years. Meanwhile, technology has advanced tremendously, making them safer and faster.

However, you should be aware that there may be risks and possible side effects associated with any medical procedure. Although extremely rare, possible complications that may occur after surgery include: chronic dry eye, visual halos and fog, undercorrection, overcorrection, flap-related complications, retinal detachment, infection.

Laser diopter reduction is permanent and very stable over time. There is no risk of previous diopters returning.

Keep in mind that the evolution of eye structures over time may bring slight diopter changes, independent of the procedure. This is the case with the crystalline lens which loses elasticity and starts adding near vision diopters after 40-45 years and after 60 slowly develops cataracts.

Fear of surgery is understandable but in the case of laser procedures the interventions are extremely fast and involve no discomfort. Although performed in an operating room with all related protocols, they can hardly be called "surgical operations" in the commonly known sense. Patients say almost without exception that they didn't realize when it was over and regret not having the procedure earlier.

To see well after presbyopia onset, reading glasses or progressive glasses are worn if there are other previous refractive errors.
