They are used by the ophthalmologist for: examination of the fundus of the eye for the purpose of diagnosing and treating certain diseases; diagnosing certain refractive errors in children; treatment of certain conditions such as amblyopia, iridocyclitis.

The effect of drops used in pupil dilation lasts between 2 and 48 hours, depending on the individual (e.g., it lasts longer in patients who have a lighter iris color and generally in children – in whom dilation drops are administered multiple times for the correct determination of diopters).

Side Effects of the Drops:

  • slight stinging sensation in the eye at the time of administration - a sensation that disappears within a few seconds of administration;
  • 'foggy' vision especially for near vision;
  • increased sensitivity to light (which is why it is desirable for the patient to have a pair of protective sunglasses after visiting the ophthalmologist);
  • 'red eye';
  • dry mouth;
  • 'flush' (redness) of the face;
  • temperature;
  • rapid pulse.

It is important to note that all these effects are transient and resolve within a few hours, once the substance is eliminated from the body and pupil size normalizes.
