Smile PRO
The Most Eye-Friendly Laser Technique

Minimally invasive surgery for myopia and astigmatismThe most eye-friendly laser technique for myopia and astigmatism

TOP TECHNOLOGY

ZEISS Visumax 800 - the fastest laser.

Smile PRO is performed with the ZEISS Visumax 800 laser, the most advanced and fastest laser for refractive surgery. The laser action takes only 10 seconds per eye.

NO FLAP

Minimally invasive, no flap cutting.

Unlike LASIK, Smile PRO does not require creating a corneal flap. The laser creates and then the surgeon extracts a lenticule through an incision of only 2-4mm, preserving corneal integrity.

FAST RECOVERY

Quick return to daily activities.

Thanks to the minimally invasive technique, recovery is fast. Most patients can return to normal activities within 24-48 hours, with minimal risk of dry eye.

Smile PRO in Brief

Smile PRO (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a single-step femto-laser procedure used for myopia and astigmatism. The ZEISS Visumax 800 laser creates a lenticule inside the cornea, which is then extracted by the surgeon through a minimal 2-4mm incision. It offers precision, stability, and easy healing.

Smile PRO Surgery Steps

Laser Surgery - Clario Team

This is a complete ophthalmological consultation to evaluate the health of your eyes. Pupil dilation drops are necessary for accurate prescription measurement and complete examination. This includes detailed explanation of the procedure and all the particularities of your case.

You will know what to expect both during the procedure and post-operatively.

The complete pre-operative investigation package is performed in the clinic with state-of-the-art equipment. These are necessary to precisely establish the technical parameters for the laser treatment, all based on your eye anatomy.

For convenience, the consultation and investigations can be done on the same day (2 hours total for both).

On surgery day, you will undergo a complex, personalized, highly precise, minimally invasive procedure that reshapes the optical system of both eyes. The procedure is painless, with local anesthesia using drops. All you need to do is follow some light markers while comfortably positioned on an automatic bed.

The procedure is performed with the ZEISS Visumax 800 laser.

You will come for check-ups the next day, after one week, and then as indicated by the doctor: one month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year to monitor the healing and adaptation process. Subsequently, check-ups are done annually.

The whole process, from the investigation to the diopter reduction operation, went smoothly. The operation itself was very fast and successful. 24 hours after surgery I can say that I can see very well without glasses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Smile PRO.

It is recommended that diopters be stable for at least 1 year before surgery, especially for myopia.

The absence of any progressive eye disease is an essential condition for eligibility for eye surgery. But it is not always sufficient. There are other criteria that must be considered.

Corneal thickness (the lens at the front of the eye) is very important, as vision correction is done by reshaping the tissue of this lens. This means a minimum corneal thickness is required, beyond which the surgery may become risky for the eye.

Pupil diameter should not be too large. If pupils are naturally large, there is a risk of unpleasant visual effects after surgery: halos, glare at night, especially when driving.

High diopter values may limit the possibility of complete correction. Results of laser eye surgery for high diopters can be unpredictable and may carry a risk of visual complications. In these situations, other intraocular procedures for vision correction may be recommended.

Progressive eye diseases such as: keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, severe dry eye, cataract, eye inflammations prevent you from having laser vision correction surgery. There are other procedures for such situations.

Degenerative or autoimmune conditions such as: diabetes, connective tissue diseases, Sjogren syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV infection affect post-operative healing and are contraindications for laser surgery.

ATTENTION: Soft contact lens wear must be stopped at least one week before the consultation and at least two weeks before surgery. For orthokeratology hard lenses, the term is at least one month.

Laser reshaping requires detailed and very precise measurements of all eye structures.

Investigations include:

  • Pentacam corneal tomography
  • Computerized refraction
  • Biometry
  • Retinal and optic nerve tomography

Laser vision correction is very effective and highly predictable. Almost all patients who can be safely treated using conventional laser techniques are satisfied with the surgery results.

Laser vision correction surgeries are considered among the safest in surgery overall. Millions of such procedures are performed worldwide annually and their history spans over 40 years. Meanwhile, technology has advanced enormously, making them safer and faster.

However, you should be aware that there may be risks and possible side effects associated with any medical procedure. Although extremely rare, possible complications that may occur after surgery include: temporary dry eye, visual halos and haze, undercorrection, overcorrection.

The vast majority of complications are treatable and usually resolve within the first months after surgery.

Laser vision correction is permanent and very stable over time. There is no risk of previous diopters returning.

Keep in mind that the evolution of eye structures over time may bring slight changes in diopters, independent of the surgery. This is the case with the crystalline lens, which loses elasticity and starts adding near vision diopters after 40-45 years, and after 60 slowly develops cataract.

For high diopter correction, especially farsightedness, there is a risk of regression through eye remodeling during healing.

You will see immediately after getting up from the operating bed, but vision will be "as through water". Most patients can write messages on their phone immediately. For a few hours you may experience stinging, tearing and bright light sensitivity.

In most cases recovery is very easy: immediately after surgery vision is improved, and the next day the patient can largely resume activities.

Healing occurs at each person pace, and may take from a few days to a few weeks as the visual system recalibrates and the brain gradually adapts to it.

Post-operative treatment in the first two weeks consists of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops.

Fear of surgery is understandable, but for laser procedures interventions are extremely fast and involve no discomfort. Although performed in an operating room with all protocols, they can hardly be called "surgical operations" in the sense known to everyone. Patients almost without exception say they did not realize when it was over and regret not having the procedure sooner.
